Skincare Tips for the Fall

Fall is in the air! You know what that means– crisp air, all pumpkin everything, and if you’re a sports fan, the return of football and baseball’s fall classic! But while we’re breaking out the sweaters and gearing up for a season of change, something else could easily be left in the throes of summer– our skin care regimen. While the atmosphere changes, we may keep up with the same routines as summer. But autumn commands its own changes necessary for your skin. Check out a few tips below:

  • For many, fall brings conditions that dry out the skin. Combat this by making the switch to a soap-free cleanser. Soap, by its very nature, can leave your skin feeling dry– doubly so if you live in a region where the water is a bit harder. Creams like Neutratone can be a better bet, as they are easier on the skin and leave it feeling much more moisturized.
  • You should already be exfoliating regularly, but come fall it may be time to get acquainted with an oil-based exfoliant. Reasons for this are similar to moving on from soap: oil keeps your skin moisturized by virtue of its hydrophobic nature. After all, an excess of water can tend to dry out the skin!
  • Lotions are generally fine, but a stronger and thicker cream could better suit your skin’s needs during the cooler months. Unlike traditional lotions, creams tend to have– you guessed it– higher oil content, which keeps just the right amount of water in your skin cells.
  • Granted, the tips so far have assumed that your skin becomes drier during the cooler months. But everyone is different; just because it’s the tendency of many doesn’t mean it’s true for you. That said, it’s worth reassessing your skin’s characteristics at the start of each new season, including fall. For example, if your skin becomes a bit more oily, an oil-based wash may not be your best bet. Just remember to adjust your regimen to your body’s particular and unique needs.
  • This is a rule that’s golden for everyone: don’t forget the sunscreen. Just because it’s not hot out does not mean the sun is taking a few months off! Sunscreen protects you from skin-damaging UV rays, not the heat.
